Featuring Birmingham Festival Choral Society, David Wynne (conductor) & Kevin Gill (piano)

Programme includes a selection of songs from the English madrigal school including popular pieces by Weelkes, Morley, Wilbye and Gibbons - as well as folk song arrangements by Holst and Vaughan Williams.
Composer and conductor Sir John Rutter - familiar to many for his much-loved Christmas carols, is represented in the concert by two extended song cycles, The Sprig of Thyme - an arrangement of traditional folk songs, and Birthday Madrigals which incorporates settings of poems by Shakespeare and others.

Birmingham Festival Choral Society sings a wide variety of top quality choral music from the 16th to the 21st century and perform three main concerts a year, usually in churches or concert halls in central Birmingham. Out of town concerts in recent years have taken place in The Philharmonic Hall Liverpool, St Mary’s Church, Warwick, Lichfield Cathedral and Pershore Abbey.

BFCS also commissions new works, the most recent being Bob Chilcott, Circle Song (2004) and Patrick Larley, The Birmingham Spirituals (2014).
